The objective of the organised training programme for researchers at The University of Bergen is the completion of a PhD-degree (philosophiae doctor). The standard time for completion of the degree is equivalent to three years of full-time work. In addition to completing a doctoral thesis under contract-bound supervision, the candidate has to undergo obligatory training in scientific theory and method. At least one semester is allocated to the organised training programme for researchers. 

To be admitted to the doctoral programme of a Faculty, applicants must have obtained a higher degree within the discipline for which they are seeking admission, or they must satisfy the admission requirements through other qualifications approved by the Faculty. 

Anyone who has obtained a higher degree may apply for permission to submit a thesis for the Dr.philos.-degree (doctor philosophiae), which requires no obligatory training
