CIPR takes petroleum knowledge into offshore wind energy
The geoscience group at CIPR has teamed up with NorWind Installer, OWEC Tower AS, Vestavind Offshore AS, MENCK GmbH, BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH and Strathclude University for an innovation project addressing improved installing procedures for offshore windfarms. The project is supported by the Norwegian Research Council's RENERGI program.
Apart from coordinating and managing the project for the project owner (Norwind Installer), CIPR's part involves developing methods for integrated environmental site characterization for planning and optimising wind farm lay out and choice of anchor design.
CIPRs entry into the offshore wind farm business is likely to provide a fertile ground for transferring tools and methods traditionally used in the petroleum industry into the expanding field of offshore wind energy.
